Peebles householders benefit from Home Energy Efficiency Programme

A range of free or heavily subsidised insulation measures are being offered to householders with eligible homes in Peebles* and with a Council Tax Band A, B or C. Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Government’s Home Energy Scotland are working together to provide this offer which is supported locally by Change Works in Peebles.

Insulation measures on offer include internal wall insulation and cavity wall insulation, which make the home cheaper and easier to heat, leading to significant savings on energy bills.

For householders not eligible for funded measures, Change Works in Peebles can support those wishing to undertake their own home energy efficiency measures.  Change Works in Peebles has launched a guide to help householders in Peebles find a contractor to install energy efficiency measures in their home. People using the ‘Contractor Guide to Installing energy efficiency measures’ will receive a free quality assurance inspection from Changeworks. Contractors included on the guide can install measures such as insulation, helping reduce energy bills, save money and make homes more comfortable. Contractors are all specialists in carrying out energy improvements, are Green Deal approved and able to access Energy Company Obligation (ECO) funding where available.

Donna Marshall, Project Manager of Change Works in Peebles said: “We have spoken to hundreds of householders in Peebles to find out what the local issues and challenges are around saving energy and costs.  The Contractor Guide and our range of events, workshops and advice sessions is in direct response to the help requested by the community.

“Peebles has been chosen for this project because data analysis shows it to be a high energy use town with fuel bills 14% higher than the national average and annual median gas use 12% higher than the Scottish Borders average.  This project is all about helping to reduce costs and improve warmth in local homes, schools and businesses.”

Councillor Mark Rowley, Executive Member for Business and Economic Development, said: “This pilot programme for Scotland’s Energy Efficiency Programmeis an excellent opportunity for people in Peebles to take advantage of the range of financial support and advice available to reduce fuel bills and make their homes more energy efficient.
“I encourage local residents to drop in to the Change Works in Peebles hub in the town centre to find out more.”
