The Brodsky Quartet at Music in Peebles

February 6, 2022 @ 2:30 pm
Eastgate Theatre

Music in Peebles warmly welcomes back the Brodsky Quartet in their 50th anniversary year, to play for us at our second afternoon concert of the year on Sunday 6th February 2022 at 2.30pm in Eastgate Theatre.

Since its formation in 1972 the Brodsky Quartet has performed over 3000 concerts on the major stages of the world and released more than 60 recordings. A natural curiosity and insatiable desire to explore has propelled the group in many artistic directions and continues to ensure them not only a place at the very forefront of the international chamber music scene but also a rich and varied musical existence. Their energy and craftsmanship have attracted numerous awards and accolades worldwide, while ongoing educational work provides a vehicle for passing on experience and staying in touch with the next generation.

Currently, the Brodsky Quartet members are

Krysia Osostowicz and Ian Belton (violins) Paul Cassidy (viola), Jacqueline Thomas (cello).

They will play this exciting programme –

Borodin Scherzo in D for String Quartet

Schubert String Quartet No. 13 in A minor D.804, Op.29 (“Rosamunde”)

MacMillan For Sonny’   and   ‘Memento’

Schostakovisch String Quartet No. 9 in E flat, Op.117

The energetic scherzo by Borodin, is later orchestrated for inclusion in his unfinished Third Symphony. This is followed by Schubert’s ever popular ‘Rosamunde’ Quartet, full of the composer’s characteristic lyricism, yet tinged with the despondency he felt due to his failing health. After two miniatures by James MacMillan, the concert ends with Shostakovich’s enigmatic 9th quartet. Although often regarded one of his more exuberant, there are also moments of darkness as well as of contentment before the exhilarating tour-de-force of a finale.

In their own words, The Brodsky Quartet are “Proud to be associated as Artists in Residence with London’s finest chamber music venue, award-winning Kings Place and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland holding the International Fellows in Chamber Music.”
